A legal eviction order had been granted by Judge Mbha of the South Gauteng High Court for residents of the building to be forcefully removed.
Hundreds of Red Ants who closed off the streets were initially met with fierce resistance by the occupiers who threw stones and blocked the entrances with furniture. They were peppered with rubber bullets and finally stood down and allowed the process to take place.
All of their belongings were removed, some ending up on the pavement and road.
According to Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, 12 civilians and four members of the Red Ants were injured during the incident. Three of the civilians were taken to the local clinic for treatment.
