Dog killed in attack at Paterson Park
PATERSON PARK - A resident walking her dog was subjected to two other dogs injuring and fatally wounding her pet on 30 January at 7pm in Paterson Park.
Nancy Fensham and her Jack Russel, Lilly, were walking along Paterson Road in Paterson Park when two dogs that were not on their leads approached Lilly and started to interact with the her.
The owner of the two dogs, a Doberman and a Pitbull, was not to be seen according to Fensham.
Fensham said, “It all happened so fast. The Pitbull seemed friendly, however the Doberman was more boisterous and started running into Lilly. She cowered and lay down. When I managed to chase the other two dogs away I noticed she was not moving.”
According to Fensham, the owner of the other two dogs arrived and reprimanded his pets, however left the scene without taking any notice of the Jack Russel, Lilly, that was not moving.
Fensham added, “I think the owner did not want to take responsibility. The dogs are not at fault here. The owner is at fault with his negligent attitude. A common misconception is that the dogs are at fault here. I certainly do not want this to happen to another dog owner.” Fensham urged that dog owners keep their dogs on their leads if they misbehave or show signs of being aggressive.
Fenshams dog, Lilly, seems to have suffered a fatal concussion as a result of the Doberman.
The matter falls in the hands of the South African Police Service as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, more commonly known to the public as the SPCA, only acts if an animal is injured or neglected by a person or persons.
The owner of the Doberman and the Pitbull is liable for damages in this case.
Do you believe that dogs should always be on their leads in public spaces?
