For the love of poetry
HOUGHTON - Poetry discussions hosted by the Union of Jewish Women (UJW) provide education and enrichment.
As part of a programme of lectures and discussions hosted by the UJW Adult Education Division, a group of Johannesburg residents meets weekly to be stimulated and entertained by an exploration of contemporary poetry.
Under the leadership and gentle guidance of Dr Lorrain Chaskalson, former lecturer in the Department of English at Wits University, the group uses poetry as an avenue to learn together, accessing a range of different ideas and opinions. Asked why they enjoyed the weekly sessions, members responded that Chaskalson’s vast knowledge and skill led the readers to stimulate their minds with never-before considered concepts, and ultimately to reflect on their own lives and circumstances in what becomes an exercise in self-examination.
The poetry course is part of a wide range of lectures and discussions offered by the UJW Adult Education Division. The UJW is non-denominational and welcomes newcomers of all ages and sexes. A nominal charge includes refreshments.
Details: Poetry discussions weekly at 9.30am, 1 Oak Street, Houghton; 011 648 1053.
