A double miracle

ROSEBANK - TWO very fortunate kittens have managed to survive in the engine compartment of a car for 3 to 6 days without water or food.

Rosebank resident Ingrid Mech, who had spent the week working in Mpumalanga and returned on Friday afternoon, suspects that both kittens sought shelter from the heavy rain in Secunda by climbing into the undercarriage of her car.

Mech explained that she first heard the panicked call of a kitten from the parking garage and realised it was coming from her vehicle.

“After numerous fruitless attempts to lure the kitten out with milk, I opted to drive to the nearby Rosebank Fire Station for assistance,” she said.

“I didn’t know what to do,” Mech added.

“The team was absolutely brilliant. They were extremely methodical in their approach and showed great care in their efforts to free the tiny kitten,” said Mech.

“After a three-hour ordeal, the team finally managed to pull the kitten from deep within the engine compartment,” Mech added on.

The second kitten was found a couple of days later when Mech took her car in for a service after experiencing complications with her car.

“I booked it in for its service… and told the guys at the workshop about the kitten incident and to please just make sure everything is tight. When they opened my bonnet, there was another tiny little kitten sitting on my engine,” Mech said.

“She [kitten] is very fragile and dehydrated, and I’ve named her Miracle,” Mech added on.

Both kittens are currently being kept at Cat-a-holics animal shelter in Rosebank.

Director and public relations officer of the animal shelter, Ariana Oreb, explained that the shelter looked after 80 cats.

“The shelter is a non-profit organisation and all the money made from the adoptions is used for sterilisations and vaccinations of the animals,” she said.

Oreb explained that because so many cats were unwanted, the shelter believed in sterilising all their animals.

“Cat-o-holics is a strictly no kill organisation and we would rather turn people away than take in too many cats and not be able to look after them all,” said.
