Warm friendship of 70 years

JOBURG - Seventy years ago when the world was still recovering from the chaos inflicted by World War II, a friendship was forged between two teenage girls at Britzius Tutorial College in Johannesburg in 1945.

Today in their late 80s, Edith Morley and Eileen Robb’s friendship remains firm and both are blessed with good health. Morley continues to enjoy playing table tennis and Robb enjoys her brisk walks.

The two started a tradition in 1975 after Morley had sent a birthday card to Robb. Since then the good friends have exchanged the same card on each others’ birthdays for 40 years. Each time they wrote birthday messages in the card and have had to add new pages as it got full over the years.

The card clearly shows its age, but its colours are still bright and vivid. The card reads: ‘Happy Birthday to my considerate, talented, charming, intelligent, magnificent friend’ and inside are the words: ‘From your considerate, talented, charming, intelligent, magnificent friend’.

Morley has been a resident of Rand Aid Association’s retirement village, Thornhill Manor for 10 years while Robb lives a short drive away. The two celebrated their 70th anniversary of their friendship in January this year.
