Wasted water during restrictions

ILLOVO – During the current phase of drought and water restrictions, a burst fresh water pipe on the corner of North and Venus streets in Illovo has been left unattended for almost an entire day, causing thousands of litres of fresh water to cascade down North Street all the way to Wrenrose Avenue.

Local resident Paul Hatty, discovered the burst on the morning of 11 November while out cycling. Attempts to log the problem with Joburg Water were unsuccessful as his calls were left unanswered.

When Rosebank Killarney Gazette went to the intersection to investigate later that afternoon, numerous motorists and pedestrians stopped to complain that the severe leak was noticed as early as 8am, many of them claiming that they had reported the issue and uttering that they find it ‘disgusting’ that so much water could be wasted due to a lack of service delivery.

The paper made Joburg Water aware of the problem through social media, but thus far they have not responded to repair enquiries. Spokesperson for Joburg Water, Eleanor Mavimbela, was unavailable to comment at the time of the article being published.
