JRA cannot confirm Northfield Avenue repairs due to logistical challenges

A Glenhazel road has begun deteriorating barely six months after reinstatement, prompting questions from local leadership over municipal repair standards.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) defended its workmanship on Northfield Avenue in Glenhazel on November 5, after Ward 72 councillor Daniel Schay raised concerns about emerging potholes on the newly reinstated roa

JRA head of department in regional operations, Khayalethu Gqibitole, said, “There may have been a residual leak that resulted in the road base becoming saturated, compromising its structural integrity.

This could have contributed to the deterioration of the road surface and the subsequent formation of potholes at the intersection.”

He noted that the JRA’s inspectors are deployed on site daily and conduct pre- and post-inspections to monitor road conditions and assess the quality of completed maintenance work.

“We are aware of the road deterioration at this intersection.”

This comes after Schay visited the road last month and alerted the publication to its poor state.

Logistical challenges delay repairs

Gqibitole said JRA is experiencing logistical challenges that affect the entity’s turnaround time: “Once these challenges have been resolved, we will be in a better position to confirm and communicate the anticipated commencement date for the repairs.”
