On 7 January, the DA and Mmusi Maimane, the leader of the party, took to the streets of Johannesburg to begin their campaign against unemployment, and furthermore against the work of the ANC.
The main focus of the campaign is a billboard on the corner of Sauer and Jeppe streets with a counter of the number of people who have become unemployed since President Jacob Zuma’s time as leader.
“It is a billboard that says there’s hope for South Africans,” Maimane said.
The billboard reads “1 842 854 more people jobless under Zuma’s ANC”.
It also functions as a tally of all the people who lose their jobs daily under the current government.
The official statistic from the quarterly labour force survey states that one new person becomes unemployed every 112 seconds in South Africa which means that each day there are 774 new unemployed people in South Africa.
The billboard unveiled by the DA is not only a rally for the plight against unemployment, but also for change – change that will allow ‘the blue machine’ to help the country and every issue facing its people.
“When we remember that when things are going one way, when you bring change, you bring change that brings hope, change that delivers jobs, change that cuts corruption and that change can only come from the DA,” he continued.
Hundreds of DA fans attended the event in the scorching heat to show their support for the DA and their cause to shape a better future for South Africa.
