Sydenham pool closed during heat wave

SYDENHAM - With the heat reaching 40 degrees and above in Johannesburg over the past few weeks, many residents visited Sydenham swimming pool to cool off – only to discover that the swimming pool had been closed for most of the festive season.

Ward 72 councillor Steven Kruger received numerous complaints from residents about the closure of the pool. It is believed there had been a problem with the pool since the middle of December due to the non-delivery of chemicals which left the water green and resulted in the closure of the swimming facility.

Kruger said, “From my understanding there has been a shortage of pool chemicals since the middle of December due to supply chain issues, which may have resulted in problems at other swimming pools as well.”

He added that the pool had been refilled mid-December in the hope that it would improve the quality of the water, however, the pool remained green.

Resident Amanda Dewar said, “The Sydenham swimming pool has been without chemicals, rendering the pool green, covered in algae and unhealthy to swim in – apparently a delay in delivery of chemicals. So in the hottest month, over the holidays, there are no facilities available to the public for cooling off.”

On 7 January, two drums of chemicals were delivered which were added to the water but seemed to have no effect on the condition of the pool. It is now thought that the fault seems to be the pool pump.

Kruger said they would try and get a city council pool expert to look at the problem.
