Concerned Norwood resident, Beata Gianni, said the rubbish posed a serious health hazard and should be removed before people became sick. “It is a hygiene problem and in view of global warming I think it is a crime towards our planet,” she said.
Gianni proposed that an educational programme should be introduced for residents so they could understand the danger they were causing in leaving piles of rubbish outside the bins.
However, Norwood Police Station spokesperson Nurse Senyane dismissed the claims and said the barracks was not always full of litter.
“Unfortunately, our cleaners are not [always] around and when the bins are full, people drop things on the ground. When Pikitup comes they only empty the bins and leave the litter on the floor,” she said.
