Councillor frustrated at lack of progress by JRA with storm drain issue

LINKSFIELD – Ward 72 councillor, Steven Kruger is questioning why it took the Johannesburg Roads Agency almost five months to resolve a partially collapsed storm drain issue in Linksfield.

The issue was reported to the entity by Kruger in November last year and despite numerous follow-ups with the entity, the matter remained unresolved until last week.

“The collapsed drain is located on Tregoning Road and is right next to a school, making it a hazard for schoolchildren passing by on their way to and from school,” Kruger said.

“I reported it to the JRA and despite numerous promises to investigate the issue, they kept postponing it and my fear is that the rest of the drain will eventually collapse and cause an even bigger hazard.”

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, marketing and communications operations manager of the agency, confirmed that the entity had been made aware of the issue and explained the delay in fixing it.

“Once a matter is reported to JRA, certain factors determine resolution time, most especially in the case of collapsed storm water drains. What JRA [does] ensure is that temporary safety measures are put in place whilst investigations and preparations to repair the collapsed or damaged storm water drains [are underway],” Peters-Scheepers said.

Peters-Scheepers confirmed that work on the collapsed drain had already started and urged disgruntled residents to report road and storm water issues to the entity through the various platforms available.
