UPDATE: Provincial top cop denies taxi rank shooting

JOBURG – Rival taxi associations continue to fight.

UPDATE: 12 May 2016, 2:30pm – Provincial police spokesperson, Major Mack Mgomezulu has denied reports that there was taxi violence at the Noord (MTN) taxi rank this morning.

“We found police officers there and they say no person was shot. The situation is normal, but police are still monitoring.”

Spokesperson for Metro police, Edna Mamonyana did, however, confirm that two rival taxi associations had a standoff this morning. “A taxi owner was shot and wounded while one other person was stabbed and left wounded this morning at that taxi rank.”

Mamonyane did not want to disclose the names of the taxi associations that were involved.

INITIAL REPORT: 12 May 2016, 9am – A taxi boss was shot and injured this morning in alleged taxi association rivalry.

It is understood that the man was shot at the Noord (MTN) taxi rank in the city centre. There were also unconfirmed reports that suggest a second man was stabbed and injured.

Provincial police are on the way to the scene.
