Orange Grove retirement home needs volunteers

ORANGE GROVE - Residents urged to help local retirement home.

The Queen Alexandra Retirement Village is appealing to the community to assist in the day-to-day running of the facility.

The longstanding home located in Orange Grove, takes care of elderly people between the ages of 70 and 80, those in a frail state and those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Angelique Coetser, speaking on behalf of the retirement village, explained the plight to raise awareness and get support from the local community. “We basically wanted to raise awareness about the home and let residents know about us and request their support in keeping the home running and able to continue taking care of the elderly,” she said.

Coetser highlighted that support could be in the form of monetary donations, volunteering or helping to maintain the building.

She especially stressed the home’s need for volunteers to entertain the elderly and keep them occupied. “Many of our elderly get lonely and would really appreciate visitors coming in to entertain them and do activities with them from time to time,” Coetser said.

Another way residents can help could be through sponsoring a patient by paying for their accommodation and day-to-day care at the home.

This would assist patients who have been staying at the home for such a long period of time that their funds had been depleted and have to be taken care of by the home for free.

She concluded by appealing to residents to contact the home via e-mail or telephone should they wish to assist or donate to the home.
