After two suspects were sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison for armed robbery by the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court, the Johannesburg East Cluster issued a media statement saying this would show that crime does not pay and also serve as a deterrent to would-be criminals.
“On 26 June last year, at about 2.45pm, police officers from the Johannesburg Flying Squad were patrolling City Deep in Johannesburg when they came across four suspicious-looking men on Vickers Street,” said Warrant Officer Richard Munyayi of Jeppe Police Station, ” Munyani explained.
“They stopped and searched the men. Upon searching them, they found Khulekani Nxumalo in possession of a firearm L32 CAL Auto with three live rounds. It was later discovered that the firearm was [used] in an armed robbery in Honeydew in 2008. Nxumalo was arrested and detained at Jeppe Police Station.” He was sentenced to eight years in prison for possession of the unlicensed firearm.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Khulekani Luvuno (24) was sentenced to 10 years in prison for armed robbery. On 18 August last year, at about 7.15pm, a woman was walking from her church when she was approached by two men on the corner of Beit and Irene streets in Doornfontein.
“The men threatened to stab her with knives if she made a noise. They took her bag and ran away. The woman screamed and people who were around, gave chase,” said Munyayi. Metro police officers who were patrolling the area at the time, also gave chase after they witnessed the incident. They arrested Luvuno and found him in possession of the bag which was taken from the woman. They arrested and detained him at Jeppe Police Station.”
Munyayi continued, “Both men will spend their time in prison and this should serve as a deterrent to would-be criminals that crime does not pay.”
Johannesburg East Cluster comprises seven police stations including Cleveland, Jeppe, Hillbrow, Rosebank, Parkview, Norwood and Yeoville police stations.
