A man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and a hijacked motor vehicle in Yeoville on 20 June at about 6pm at the corner of De la Rey and Urania streets.
According to Yeoville Police Station spokesperson Thabo Malatji, the police noticed a BMW X5 with two occupants in Bruma and when they tried to stop it the suspects sped off.
“A high-speed chase ensued until Yeoville and the suspects drove into a dead end. Two suspects jumped out of the vehicle and one ran away,” said Malatji. He said the other suspect was apprehended and found to be carrying a firearm.
The police searched the vehicle and found another gun inside the vehicle. The serial numbers of both firearms had been filed off. The vehicle was reported hijacked in the Booysens area.
The suspect was detained and is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
