Hillbrow police nabbed two men caught with unlicensed firearms within the precinct over the course of four days last week.
The first arrest took place on 22 August along Edith Carvel and Esselen streets in Hillbrow as, according to Hillbrow Police Station spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, police officers were busy patrolling the area. “As the officers were carrying out their duties, they spotted a suspicious looking man and decided to stop and search him,” he explained.
“During the search, the officers allegedly discovered a 9mm pistol and 14 live rounds and they arrested him on the spot for the offence.”
In the second incident, police officers were conducting an intensive search in a block of problematic flats in Berea when they came across an accused who was also found with an unlicensed firearm. Zondo said he was also found with live ammunition and was arrested.
“Both [accused] were detained at the Hillbrow Police Station where they were each charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm,” he said. The two have since appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
