Doccie released on skate school

JOBURG – Skateistan now has its very own movie.

The skate school recently opened in Johannesburg has recorded a ‘doccie’ in honour of its launch and the people who contributed towards it.

Skateistan is the super trendy social initiative that has made its way from Istanbul, Cambodia and a number of other countries across the globe to Johannesburg’s up-and-coming Maboneng Precinct.

The skate school aims to engage with the vulnerable and underprivileged youth of Johannesburg, to teach them important life skills and hopefully encourage them to empower themselves.

The school was officially opened on 15 August, in the presence of a number of influential industry leaders including skateboarder Tony Hawk and the chief executive officer and founder of Skateistan, Oliver Percovich.

A 10-minute long documentary was filmed about the institution and one of its volunteers.

“Filmed around the official launch of the skate school last month, the story is focused on an educator who started as a volunteer. The 10-minute documentary also features Tony Hawk and founder of Skateistan, Oliver Percovich,” said Hannah Bailey, communications manager at Skateistan.

“We are proud to have worked with director Coral Amy Brown and the guys at Solo Content Agency on the short documentary for High Snobiety [an online street culture news site] about the impact of Skateistan and the new school in Johannesburg.”

Hawk said it was not only skateboarding itself that the youth were inspired by but through it, they are also encouraged to start businesses designing skateboard decks and streetwear, among other things.
