A Craighall resident is concerned about the constant dumping of household rubbish and garden refuse in a stream which flows between Roxburghe and Buckingham avenues.
After several attempts to find the culprit, to no avail, Sylvia Leybold-Kugler reported the problem to the Craighall Residents’ Association.
Leybold-Kugler lives on the last property situated next to the Hugh Wyndham Park and said a large amount of rubbish can be found in the stream, especially after a large downpour.
She found plastic bottles and styrofoam containers in the river, as well as garden refuse such as large bamboo poles.
“We have to deal with other people’s garbage. It’s an overwhelming task to keep the river clean and running and keep our property safe at the same time,” said Leybold-Kugler.
The river runs through several private properties and is accessible from many streets and this makes it even more difficult to find the culprit.
Monica Ross, the street representative for Roxburghe Avenue, said she highly doubts that it is a resident who is tossing their waste in the river as waste could originate from anywhere.
Ross added that the waste might be flowing downstream from a stormwater drain.
Tim Truluck, Ward 117 councillor, said there was not much that could be done unless they were able to find out who the culprit is.
“You have to find out who is responsible, ask on the social media groups to find out who it is,” suggested Truluck.
