Wits Medical School declared safe after speculations of a possible fire
BRAAMFONTEIN – Speculation of a fire at the Wits Medical School has been put to bed following an investigation by Emergency Medical Services.

After the fire scare that was reported at the Wits Medical School in Parktown on 3 March, Wits University spokesperson, Shirona Patel, has confirmed that following an investigation by Emergency Medical Services, no fire was detected within the building.
“Following a thorough evaluation of the building, the City of Joburg’s Emergency Medical Services has declared that the Wits Medical School is safe and students and staff have been allowed to return to the building,” she said.
“Early indications are that the smoke may have been caused by an electrical fault. [As such] electricians are on-site and further investigations are underway. We thank all staff and students for their cooperation [in the midst of the chaos] and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
During preliminary investigations into the cause of the smoke, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Michael Veller, had vehemently stated that no fire was detected, except for a visible puff of smoke at the time.
