WARNING: Cosas protest in CBD, avoid De Korte, Rissik, Eloff and Joubert streets, violence expected

JOBURG - Metro police officers deployed in central Johannesburg ahead of Cosas March.

Approximately 300 Metro police officers will be stationed in central Johannesburg following reports of a planned protest by The Congress of South African Students (Cosas).

Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for Metro police said, “Cosas has indicated that they will be protesting at Metro Centre… We are expecting a violent protest,” he warned.

He urged motorists to avoid the Metro Centre, specifically De Korte, Rissik, Joubert and Kloof streets.

Minnaar added that the Cosas protest was illegal and so the route, time or meeting point of the protest is unknown. He stated that there would be a large contingent of Metro police officers in the area. Other reports indicate that the March will start at 10am from Park Station.

Earlier reports also indicate that a protest took place on 15 March, also headed by Cosas. “Where there was serious crime, those will be investigated by the police,” he concluded.
