MUST READ: Boxer pays tribute to legendary Nick Durandt

GLENHAZEL – Nick was a legend in boxing and someone to learn from.

Fighter, trainer and True Combat Boxing Club owner, Ronen Shapiro, described the passing of the legendary boxing trainer Nick Durandt at age 53 as tragic for the sporting fraternity.

Durandt died in a motorbike accident on 21 April in the Free State and it is believed that he collided with a vehicle on the road between Bethlehem and Clarens.

Shapiro, who owns a boxing club in Glenhazel, spoke about his fond memories that he had shared with the legendary boxing trainer and said they were good friends.

“We did some training together and Nick was always accommodating when our fighters needed inter-club sparring,” said Shapiro.

“Boxing in South Africa has lost a lot with Nick’s passing. Nick was the best boxing coach this country has ever seen and he cannot be replaced although I believe his legacy will live on in his son Damien.”

Shapiro added that boxing trainers, clients and fighters trained under Durandt and he was the country’s best boxing coach by far.

He produced 38 world champions, 27 international champions, and 95 South African champions.

“To top it all, Nick was an outspoken, passionate, knowledgeable and hard.”

Durandt was the president of the Crusaders Bike Club.
