Local talent is put on display in Newtown
JOBURG – Newtown Junction empowers artists by giving them space to showcase their work on its walls.
Newtown Junction has become a space where artists can express themselves and showcase their work. Once again mall management is putting an upcoming artist on display – in a big way. Splashed across the walls of Johannesburg are the colourful creations of street and graffiti artists. What may be an eyesore for some, is considered art by others. Some people are unaware that the longstanding graffiti pieces are, in fact, commissioned by the building owners or institutions with the aim of creating a colourful and vibrant neighbourhood.
Newtown Junction has become known for a number of festivals celebrating cultures and artists and the managers of the mall have opted to use the wall next to the Nedbank offices for artistic purposes.
This year they have initiated a project that embraces the power and artistry of graffiti and supports arts and culture in the inner-city because thousands of people see it and it almost always elicits a response – be it awe or anger.
The first work in this project was created by illustrator, Mr Ekse, who created the work titled JoVendor’sBurg and describes it as an ode to the strong women who sell their goods on Johannesburg’s streets.
“These are the mothers of Africa who throughout it all have maintained their kindness of spirit. It is an inspiring beautiful depiction of a strong African woman who can be aspired to,” he explained.
The talented artist has proudly painted on a number of walls showing items including shoes and even car parts in collaboration with well-known brand, SupremeBeing. He has also been a part of major exhibitions in Johannesburg, one of which was at the famed Artist Proof Studios – a gallery and workspace where a number of prominent local artists have created and displayed their works.
Expressing their intent to continue supporting the arts, Michael Clampett, Attacq’s [developers of Newtown Junction] head of retail asset and property management said, “Our partnership with Mr Ekse and his work of art at our Newtown Junction shopping centre builds on our vision of supporting the arts, culture and our diverse heritage, which is synonymous with the Newtown precinct.”
