Joburg microbrewery gets gassed up for guests

JOBURG – You need air to live and microbreweries need it too!

Air Products, a company supplying, well, air products, shows their support for Johannesburg’s microbreweries.

Mad Giant is just one of the many microbreweries (small-sized beer brewing company) in Johannesburg and they require one vital component for the running of their brewery – air.

As a supplier of gas, which is vital to the brewing process, Air Products has been playing an important role to support microbreweries in creating craft beers suited for this local, expanding and trendy craft beer market.

The microbrewery has been around for a few years now, having opened up shop at the exciting Sheds@1Fox venue in Ferreirasdorp, Johannesburg.

Lizette Stokes, communications officer for Air Products talked about the range of products they supplied. “Essentially we have different business units,” she said.

“On the onsite side, we supply companies with gas via a pipeline like Sasol. We also have bulk tankers which transport the gases to customers in big quantities. Then we have the package gas division, which is welding gas and part of this are speciality gases, which are typically the gases we use in breweries and in the food industry.”

According to Stokes, the company’s air and gases are used in the microbreweries to create the beer foam that beer-lovers adore, and in various other parts of the brewing process.

Mad Giant is one of the more successful microbreweries, having created a lively space in conjunction with the eatery Urbanology, at The Sheds where visitors can grab a beer, a meal and even check out how the beers are brewed and packaged.

Patrons can enjoy Mad Giant craft beers such as Jozi Sunset and Urban Legend, specially brewed by master brewer, Eben Uys.

This collaboration of gas and malt is definitely a successful one.
