Cancer awareness event in Joburg raises R58 000 for good cause

JOBURG – "Our health is a privilege and we have the responsibility to look after ourselves and others."

Nicole Capper, one of the top 25 finalists in the Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa pageant, recently hosted a star-studded night of glitz and glamouor in aid of the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

The Dine For Cansa event, which celebrated life through arts, was held at one of Joburg’s finest spots, the Gemelli Cucina Bar. Everything from performances to the actual cuisine was curated to honour those who are fighting cancer. The entertainment was delivered by some of South Africa’s finest in their respective fields.

Adventurer and wildlife photographer Gerry van der Walt gave a heartfelt account of his high profile grandfather Ge Korsten’s battle with cancer. Van der Walt also donated 12 of his best photographs which were printed on fine art canvas and auctioned off for the association.

The event raised R58 000 for Cansa.

“As a cancer survivor myself, I have faced the unthinkable and triumphed. I am blessed to have won my battle; others are not so fortunate. We all need to do our part within our communities to put our hearts, heads and wallets together to help save lives,” said Capper.

“I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma at 25, a rare form of skin cancer. The funds raised tonight will go towards the purchase of new mole mapping machines which will make sure people just like me are given the gift of early detection of various types of skin cancer.”

The guests were treated to delectable foods as well as the best in music and art.

“I designed the pop-up showcase to awaken the senses, and remind people just how spectacular life can be. I have faced many dark days in my life, but my message remains clear: No matter what we may face, life truly is beautiful. Not despite the darkness, but because of it. Darkness defines the light, and teaches us what real joy is.”

As a pharmacist and business owner, she plans to use the platform to advocate for health and be an ambassador for South Africa, empowering other women and inspiring the youth with her message.
