Councillor’s Corner: Cutting down trees

JOBURG – Read this weeks' question in Councillor's Corner.

This week’s question was:

Can residents cut off trees on the sidewalk and other municipal-owned spaces if they pose a danger? How does one go about doing it?

Nicole van Dyk, Ward 99 councillor, answered:

Any resident may cut down their trees, provided they follow the correct procedure.

First, the resident needs to make contact with Alton Rankin of City Parks who can be contacted at trees@jhbcityparks.com with details of the request.

The relevant ward councillor should be copied in on the email for information purposes. Following initial contact, a form needs to be filled out and sent back.

An inspection will then be done by City Parks to validate the request.

Once permission is given, the resident may then cut their tree and they are responsible for removing the cut-offs of the tree.
