Caster Semenya a step closer to world domination
JOBURG – Caster Semenya nominated for IAAF World Athlete of the Year.
South Africa’s very own Olympic gold medallist, Caster Semenya, has been nominated for the IAAF Female World Athlete of the Year alongside 10 other nominees.
Last year, Semenya missed out on the three-woman shortlist and will go up against equally esteemed female superstars such as Beatrice Chepkoech world steeplechase record-holder, European
5 000m champion Sifan Hassan, as well as Shaunae Miller-Uibo 200m Commonwealth Games and Diamond League champion.
Semenya’s nomination comes ahead of the IAAF Athletics Awards 2018 scheduled for 4 December in Monaco. With a three-way voting process that closes on 12 November, she was selected by an international panel of athletics experts, comprising representatives from all six continental areas of the IAAF.
She remains unbeaten in her nine 800m finals including the Commonwealth Games, African Championships, Diamond League final and Continental Cup.
The IAAF council and the IAAF Family are expected to cast their votes by email while fans can vote online via the IAAF’s social media platforms. Individual graphics for each nominee will be posted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram this week; a ‘like’ on Facebook and Instagram or a retweet on Twitter will count as one vote.
The IAAF Council’s vote will count for 50 per cent of the result, while the IAAF Family’s votes and the public votes will each count for 25 per cent of the final result.
At the conclusion of the voting process, five men and five women finalists will be announced by the IAAF.
