Suspected property hijackers nabbed during a special operation

KEW – Mashaba says that it is essential that we bring back the rule of law in the city.

Seven suspected building hijackers were arrested by law enforcement agencies during a crime prevention operation at a hijacked industrial area in Kew.

The operation was led by the City of Johannesburg’s Group Forensic and Investigation Services Unit (GFIS) in conjunction with the South African Police Services, Metro police, national traffic police, Department Home Affairs immigration officials, City Power and Johannesburg Water officials.

The properties that were targeted during the operation are situated on the corner of London Road and Third Avenue as well as in 11th Road in Kew.

According to the statement issued by the City’s Mayor Herman Mashaba, a total of seven undocumented foreign nationals were arrested.

Mashaba said immigration officers from the Department of Home Affairs will process those who were arrested to ascertain relevant information. “Two suspects were arrested for illegally selling liquor and more than 20 cases of alcohol were also confiscated during the operation.

“It is essential that we bring back the rule of law in our city and take it back from the criminal elements such as landlords who take advantage of desperate people and house them under deplorable conditions.”

The City has over 700 properties which are confirmed to be hijacked in Johannesburg and the mayor said 31 properties that were previously in the hands of hijackers have been handed back to the rightful owners.

He suggested that the rundown buildings across the city to be turned into quality low-cost housing for residents and affordable rental spaces for small businesses.

“I’m committed to ensuring that the rot in our inner city comes to an end and make it a prosperous and inclusive place for our people to live, work and play.

“I would like to thank all the role players involved in the successful operation, especially the police for their continued support.”

Mashaba has encouraged people to report any fraud and corruption activities through their 24hour tipoff hotline 080 000 2587 or visit the offices of GFIS situated at 48 Ameshoff Street, Braamfontein.
