Bank of Lisbon building firefighters discharged from Milpark Hospital
MILPARK – Two firefighter who suffered burns during the building's fire have been discharged from Milpark Hospital.
Two firefighters who bravely fought the Joburg Fire at the Bank of Lisbon building were discharged after two months of recovery at Milpark Hospital.
The fighters, Livhuwani Maumela and Moleko Bereng, suffered extensive burns following the 23-storey building’s fire that claimed the lives of three firefighters in September.
A spokesperson for EMS, Nana Radebe said that Maumela and Bereng received skin grafts on their hands which have healed but they will still be going in for physical therapy to help with the functionality of their hands. “They have been discharged and have had skin grafts. The burns have healed but not the function of their hands.”
The two fighters were visited by the Emergency Services Management and MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun who gave them and their families support.
Radebe added that there was joyful feeling as they were discharged on 12 November, but they were still reminded of the day of the horrific fire. “It was an extremely emotional day; the tragedy still hurts but there was a lot of liveliness. Emergency management is 100 per cent behind them and willing to give support to them and their families while recuperating.”
