Dead aardvark found in Waverly
WAVERLY – The rotting carcass of an aardvark was found in a Waverly garden on 12 November.
The residents and pedestrians on Athol Road in Waverly found a dead aardvark in the garden of Waverly Court’s building on 12 November.
A resident at the flat, Gerald Davids said the dead animal was found by their gardener in the early hours of the morning and that they suspected it had been dumped overnight.
The large animal was found bloated and covered in flies with the residents suspecting it being part of some sort of witchcraft, but this could not be confirmed. The animal was left throughout the morning with onlookers taking pictures.

Davids added, “This is absolutely disgusting, and the fact that we struggled to get anyone to come and pick it up is so infuriating.”
Ward 74 councillor David Fisher said, “It’s very unusual to find this animal in the area. Probably not a natural occurrence. It may be an illegal capture. We do find some small wild animals along rivers.”
Fisher added that Norwood depot of Pikitup had removed the animal at 12.30pm.

“We will have absolutely no idea how it got there until we confirm the cause of death. We cannot speculate on the circumstances until we have that information,” said the manager of Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, Michelle Watson.
