Red Bull Dance Your Style sets the stage for street dancers
JOBURG – One-on-one dance competition finds a home in Joburg.
Red Bull Dance Your Style, the one-on-one dance competition which features various street dance styles, is set to make Newtown Music Factory its home this November. Street style disciplines that include pantsula, hip-hop and afrobeats to name a few will be on show by 16 dancers.
The competition is a mixed, all-style solo battle in which dancers from any street style discipline will compete against each other. Each battle will be an exchange of the diverse numbers of styles that exist in street dance.

Dancers will have two rounds to win over the crowd and gain their vote – the crowd is the judging panel for the night, however, performance and dancer showmanship come first as dancers are free to express their personality and character, in the end, the dancer who wins will be the one who can win over the crowd with their performance and individuality.
Hip-hop jockey, Tha Cutt will be on the decks spinning commercial tracks for each round and will randomly select different genres to test the dancer’s ability to perform and adapt their dance styles to the beat. Representing hip-hop are Terry Sauls from Cape Town, Paul, Anuq and 250Machine from Joburg and Mr Socks from Pretoria. Breakdancing which was born out of hip-hop will be represented by Man Like B who has won Red Bull BC One twice. Krump, a street dance style also born from hip-hop culture, will be performed by Durban local Verb. Gugu, DRS, and Tebza200 who all hail from Johannesburg will represent pantsula and Yamoo from Tembisa will represent sbujwa.

Popping is one of the original funk dance styles that come from Fresno, California in the 80s. Bugz from Johannesburg is the only dancer who will be doing popping at this year’s show. Another dance style from the 80s is voguing, which was born from the ballrooms held in Harlem. TNT from Johannesburg will try vogue her way into the hearts of the spectators.
Sandone, an animation dancer, Sne, a new school dancer, and afrobeat dancer Zoyi all from Johannesburg make up the top 16.
