Locals share their thoughts on the commercialisation of Christmas

Rosebank Killarney Gazette asked locals whether they believe Christmas is too commercialised in South Africa.

STANLEY KHUMALO: It is very commercialised, but I believe it's a good thing. We are moving with the times with tech and culture. It teaches young ones how they should live based on the values of Christmas.

INNOCENTIA HLATSHWAYO: Everything is commercialised, but at least Christmas is fun. I like walking into the shops and seeing all the decorations.

THANDI MDAKANE: Christmas is too much about money and should be more about spending time with family.

DANIEL DAVIDSON: Since Christmas falls during summer time in South Africa, it is not commercialised enough. In America, it is way more commercialised. We don’t have enough freedom to have it commercialised in South Africa. You can’t walk around on the streets of Sandton or the Joburg CBD at night to see the lights. It’s too dangerous.

PRAVESH NAIDOO: It’s not as commercialised as it should be. Joburg really dies down over the festive season. Black Friday also takes a lot of the spending power away from customers over the festive season.
