Afropunk Solution Sessions return to Joburg ahead of main festival

Afropunk Solution Sessions, the people’s forum-turned-critically acclaimed podcast, is set to return to Joburg on 28 and 29 December for two nights of live events ahead of Afropunk Joburg 2018.

The Afropunk Solution Sessions are presented in collaboration with Red Bull Amaphiko, a platform for social entrepreneurs, which promotes and uplifts people creating change in their communities. Hosted by veteran American social activist and podcaster, Bridget Todd, the Solution Sessions will feature the two founding members of the Black Lives Matter movement, Patrisse Cullors and Alicia Garza. South African LGBTI activists Thami Kotlolo and Thokozani Ndaba and American author and filmmaker Dream Hampton are also billed to join the Solution Sessions which are free and open to the public.

Black Lives Matter has grown from a popular hashtag on social media to one of the most influential social justice and resistance movements in the world today. The Black Lives Matter Global Network is partnering with Afropunk Joburg in celebration of the social justice organisation’s fifth anniversary.

“Afropunk is more than a music festival – it represents a fusion of cultures, languages and colours from all around the world. It is a transformative festival that reminds us that we all belong; that there is so much more that unites us than divides us. It provides the platform for expression of a shared vision – of a world free from racism, sexism, ableism, ageism, homophobia, fatphobia and hatred,” said Dawn Robertson, CEO of Constitution Hill.

Discussion topics at this year’s Solution Sessions will include youth resistance, radical self-care, male and female gender roles and communication, and LGBTQ+ cultural community conversations.
