Councillor Rugheimer thanks residents for lending helping hands to #AlexFire victims
ALEXANDRA – The Department of Home Affairs has already issued IDs and birth certificates to the affected dwellers and the councillor said they would continue to assist those who were not able to be assisted immediately.
Ward 81 councillor, Irene Rugheimer, has thanked the community at large for showing unity following the aftermath of the fire that destroyed shacks in Alexandra, leaving many people homeless.
The fire, which destroyed homes on 6 December, left many people devastated and stranded.
The community, including various non-government organisations and businesses, extended their helping hands by donating clothes, furniture, food and other resourceful materials to help the affected families.
As a ward councillor, Rugheimer together committee members and the disaster management team in the City of Johannesburg worked tirelessly to assist those who were affected.
Rugheimer said they appreciated everyone who came through to assist and showed care during this difficult time for the people of Alexandra.
“We are very grateful to all the NGOs, churches, companies and banks that donated building materials, clothing, bedding and food for the victims,” said Rugheimer.
“Gift of the Givers were awesome, they were on site every day until Friday, 14 December to give assistance. They fed people, provided building material, mattresses, clothing and food parcels as well.”
Rugheimer also thanked African Bank and Lions International Clubs who also donated clothing and food parcels as well as blankets.
“There are really too many to mention but on behalf of the victims, I would like to sincerely thank each and every one who contributed – thank you for your generosity.
“A special thanks also to Sepheu Nkoele from disaster management who was on site every day and spent many hours sorting out all the distributions and logistics,” she said.

She urged residents to be vigilant during this festive season and requested them to exercise caution when leaving their homes unattended.
