Highlands North Boys’ High School welcomed their newcomers by taking them on a camping trip.
The boys were taken to Camp Riverlake on the Vaal a few days after the opening of public schools on 9 January.
According to the acting principal, Lawrence Nayager, the goal of this Grade 8 orientation camp was to assist learners to easily adapt to the school environment.
Nayager said the camp was an annual initiative to assist the boys to achieve positive attitudes, knowledge, skills and opportunities that would create a smooth transition and assimilation into high school.
“Learners were engaged in team-building activities, presentations on our school rules and policies, and learning our school war cry and songs for sporting support and unity,” said Nayager.
“We had a total of 128 Grade 8 learners and seven mentors from Grade 12 at the camp. It is recognised as compulsory for all Grade 8 learners admitted to our school to go on this orientation camp. Sadly, late admissions lose this opportunity.”
He said the activities presented to them instilled values of harmony, unity, loyalty and acceptance in the young impressionable minds of the learners.
“Our boys come back knowledgeable, equipped and developed as young ‘highlanders’.
“I am confident that this trip achieves what our school wants to happen and that is to have these learners adequately prepared mentally and socially for life in a high school,” he said.

He advised the new learners to stay in tune with the rules and regulations of the school which was to always be proud and to uphold their gentlemen’s values and to aim for excellence both in academics and sport.
