About 15 suspects were arrested by the Johannesburg Flying Squad during a routine police operation in various parts of the city over the last weekend.
The operation, which was conducted between 8 and 11 February, saw 15 suspects arrested and detained for different offences.
Johannesburg Flying Squad spokesperson, Sergeant Desmond Subramoney, said the suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from carjacking to attempted murder.
Subramoney said during the operation they recovered three carjacked vehicles, three stolen vehicles, five rifles and unlicensed 9mm pistols and ammunition.
“During their routine patrol duties police arrested seven suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and attempted murder, one for housebreaking, one for theft common, one for attempted murder, one for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and four for possession of drugs,” he said.
“The hijacked vehicles and stolen vehicles recovered include a BMW X5, BMW 535d, Peugeot, Toyota Conquest, Toyota Verso and Ford Ranger. The large quantities of unlicensed firearms recovered and confiscated for further police forensic investigation were three R5 rifles, one AK47 rifle, one dash prop rifle, one girsan 9mm pistol and one browning 9mm pistol.”
Members of the public are encouraged to continue to work with police by reporting crime and any suspicious persons and activities.
All arrested suspects are expected to appear in the different magistrate courts soon facing different charges.
