Steve Hofmeyr content to be taken off the air

JOBURG – Pay-TV platform, MultiChoice cuts ties with content featuring controversial Steve Hofmeyr.

Pay-TV platform, MultiChoice has cut ties with the controversial and often race-baiting Steve Hofmeyr. The company released a statement stating it will actively avoid airing any content – future or archival material which may feature Hofmeyr.

In a nutshell, MultiChoice’s DStv service won’t give Hofmeyr any public exposure through airtime or prospects to earn money for any of his future content as well as previous material.

Joe Heshu, MultiChoice’s group executive for corporate affairs, in a statement said they were committed to the building of a non-racial society and strongly condemn any acts of discrimination. This followed last month’s threat by MultiChoice to pull its sponsorship of the 2019 kykNET Ghoema Music Awards on condition that they pull the nomination of Die Land (The Land) music video in which Steve Hofmeyr appears alongside other Afrikaans singers.

“Our commitment to Afrikaans and all local languages will not change. It has come to our attention that Steve Hofmeyr was nominated for a Ghoema music award in the category for Best Music video. We have requested that Steve Hofmeyr not form part of the event that we sponsor as his views are not aligned with our values. We welcome a society where freedom of speech is celebrated, however we take a stand against racism,” MultiChoice said in a statement.

The group said it was proud of its support for Afrikaans, not only in their investment in content for DStv platforms but also their sponsorship of festivals, events and the broader Afrikaans performing arts sector.

Hofmeyr has since hit back at MultiChoice and said he was disappointed over the decision, however, in an interview with TshisaLIVE the singer said he would not fight the decision and would move his content to other platforms.
