S’Villa’s ode to all mothers

JOBURG – Thula is a sonic metaphor that sees S’villa wipe the tears of a weeping mother and showcase the strength women have to build in a society that is designed to weigh them down.

Initially being drawn into the music industry by the allure of fame and money, musical virtuoso and rising star, S’Villa has taken on a different trajectory. The singer, rapper, producer and songwriter said he has taken on a bigger responsibility to inspire and speak on the modern condition with his music by finding his voice in an industry that celebrates opulence, materialism and braggadocio.

“It’s no longer just a game for, it’s no longer just a thing that I’ve wanted to do. I understand now that there’s a bigger responsibility on my shoulder – fair enough, I’ve got the voice and the skill but what is my role in this industry? What message am I bringing out? What difference am I bringing to the table?” he said.

S’Villa seems to have answered his own questions following the release of his acclaimed heart gripping single Thula an ode to the role mothers play in their children’s lives as well as the community – the song is a sonic metaphor that sees S’villa wipe the tears of a weeping mother and showcase the strength women have to build in a society that is designed to weigh them down.

“It basically touches on the fact that our mothers go through challenges and hardships. We come from townships and we see what they have to go through,” S’Villa said.

The song is accompanied by a heart rendering video shot by Ambitiouz Visuals and shows the reality society’s heroines go through, for a moment the viewer takes a walk in their shoes. The video has since garnered more than 300 000 views online and continues to rake up emotional comments.

Thula establishes S’Villa as a very descriptive musician and listeners of his music are propelled to resonate to it differently.  This is his second solo project after the release of his debut single, Sthandwa Sam since joining the award-winning stable Ambitious Entertainment in 2018.

“I try to have something that I’m saying on a song. I don’t just make songs for the sake of making songs. If I’m going to do a song it has got to evoke emotion – an emotion in you. I get that inspiration from life,” he said.

With his name attached to some of the biggest songs and artists on circuit, S’villa said he was working on a full-length project and new music which are slated to be released later this year and plans to headline a big show outside the confines of South Africa.

“Music is power, I don’t have to speak in English for someone in Tanzania to resonate. I see myself collaborating with African artists and taking the African sound to the globe,” said S’Villa.
