Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra 2019 World Symphony Series Winter Season open
PARKTOWN – The acclaimed Japanese conductor Yasuo Shinozaki takes the podium for the opening two concert programmes of the season.
The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) has announced the details of its 2019 Winter Season at the Linder Auditorium in Parktown.
One of four programmes will be presented each week during the season between 22 May and 13 June. Wednesday evening performances will be reprised the following evening each Thursday.
JPO chief executive and artistic director Bongani Tembe said that an additional third performance of the first progamme will be given in the first week on Friday 24 May.
The season remains part of the renowned World Symphony Series (WSS) which was launched in Durban 24 years ago and introduced to JPO audiences in 2017. “We proudly continue our tradition of presenting front rank international conductors and soloists on our concert platforms, whilst maintaining the JPO’s mission of community engagement through the development of our dynamic artistic vision,” Tembe said.
“In so doing, we focus on bringing our audiences music-making of the highest excellence. This endeavour dovetails with our community programmes, thus offering world-class concerts, while promoting transfer of skills and music appreciation to young musicians of all races in the City of Johannesburg and its surrounds.”

Tembe said the first of these, to be performed on 22, 23 and 24 May, will feature an enticing mix of masterworks including Franz Joseph Haydn’s enchanting Surprise Symphony.
In his second programme (29 and 30 May), Shinozaki will open with the atmospherically charged Overture of Carl Maria von Weber’s ground-breaking German opera, Der Freischütz; followed by an important JPO debut performance of Elgar’s Cello Concerto from the noted new-generation soloist, Alexander Ramm.
The popular Netherlands-born conductor Arjan Tien makes a welcome return for the third programme of the season (5 and 6 June).
Tembe said the JPO’s 2019 World Symphony Series Winter Season climaxes with works of widely divergent vintages and character, offering a highly distinctive debut platform for two rising stars of the international concert scene – the American conductor Robert Moody and the young Munich-based Korean violinist Ye-Eun Choi.
The evening will open with a highlight of the Italian high baroque period –Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and concludes with Johannes Brahms’ lovely Third Symphony, written in Wiesbaden during the summer of 1883.
