Seriously Addictive Mathematics invites struggling learners to use services
NORWOOD – Currently, there are 10 math centres in Gauteng and more centres are expected to open soon in various parts of South Africa.
An international programme for learners struggling with mathematics is currently available for local schoolchildren in the Norwood area.
The global top-ranking curriculum Seriously Addictive Mathematics (Sam) is an enrichment mathematics programme based on Singapore mathematics, according to international surveys Math Conceptual Mastery Test and Problem Solving of Real-Life Problems Assessments.
Shubnum Esat, a teacher at the institution’s Norwood centre on Ivy Road, said that the programme allows children to learn mathematics in a creative, yet structured manner.
Esat explained how with the meticulously authored ‘step by step’ daily worksheets, a child will approach the subject with incremental levels of difficulty, gradually acquiring the skills to solve word-based problem sums.
She also said that their approach goes beyond merely focusing on the subject and worksheets but in the process, children also develop self-discipline, self-confidence, and perseverance.
“We use the CPA [concrete, pictorial and abstract] approach to teaching mathematics. This approach to teaching can be used at all levels and topics and it is particularly useful in teaching how to solve real-life word-based problem sums,” Esat said.
“Our focus is to prepare South African children for the future, excelling in 21st-century skills, by developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills through mathematics. Both primary and pre-primary school children who seek enrichment in mathematics and those who need remedial help on certain topics will find the support they need when attending Sam enrichment classes.”
Esat said conceptual understanding is developed when children are between the ages of four and 12 and that this stage also forms the basis for more abstract mathematics in the secondary years.
Whether children are following the South African curriculum, IEB or Cambridge, the Sam Singapore curriculum covers the same maths topics, ensuring a strong foundation for teaching maths content and problem-solving strategies.
Currently, there are 10 centres operating in Gauteng, and Esat said more centres are expected to open soon in various parts of South Africa.
