A local non-governmental organisation is calling on people with disabilities to claim tax rebates
JOBURG -– Local non-profit organisation calls on disabled people to come forward for assistance with their tax refund claims.
As the tax season draws closer, a community tax service body is calling on people living with disabilities to take advantage and claim tax rebates from the South African Revenue Service (Sars).
Let Us Assist, a local non-government organisation that helps disabled people and parents of disabled children claim tax rebates, has called on people with disabilities and families with children with disabilities to take advantage of the coming tax season to settle and claim their tax rebates.
Philippa Dissel, who manages Let Us Assist, said working people with disabilities must bring their IRP5 form, which is a tax certificate detailing their incomes, deductions and related taxes for the 2019 tax year from 1 March 2018 to the end of Feb 2019 so they can be assisted by her organisation.
She cautioned those wanting to make the tax claims to ensure they are registered with Sars and have a tax registration number before they can submit their tax returns. The organisation helps people to obtain their tax refunds by submitting their tax returns for them.
One such person is Nankie Monamodie, who works at Eskom.
“As a child, only 10 years old, I was severely disabled by a hand grenade in Soweto. However, I am a survivor. I lead a full and happy life, with two beautiful kids and I have a great job.
“I recently discovered that as a working person who is paying tax and has a disability, I qualify for tax credits. I have worked for many years and had no idea that this benefit was available to me,” Monamodie said.
