Victims of cell phone snatching asked to come forward

ROSEBANK – One of four suspects have been detained at Rosebank pending investigations and victims of cell phone theft are encouraged to come forward.

With the crime trend of cell phone snatching seemingly on the rise again in Rosebank, the Rosebank Police Station briefed security companies to be on the lookout for particular suspicious vehicles.

That is how Excellerate Security Services Reaction officers noticed a suspicious white Nissan Almera while driving along Cradock Avenue approaching Biermann Road in Rosebank, during one of their patrols according to Excellerate precinct manager, Lerato Khiba.

“The officers drove behind the suspicious vehicle with the intention to stop it and question the suspects. It was established that the suspects noticed they were being followed and that’s when they sped off in high speed. As they were approaching Oxford Road, they skipped red traffic lights and, in so doing so, bumped into the back of a Toyota Corolla,” Khiba explained.

She added that there were four suspects inside the vehicle and three fled the scene while the reaction officer apprehended the suspect who was driving and immediately contacted the police.

Rosebank Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe confirmed that the suspect is still detained pending further investigation. “The car was also towed to the station for further investigation and a charge of common robbery and negligent driving was laid. We would like more people who were victims of cell phone snatching to come forward with information as we are trying to link this suspect to similar crimes and make more arrests,” said Mdletshe.
