Eco-friendly sleeping bags for the displaced for Mandela Day
ROSEBANK – The Glass Recycling Company spent their 67 minutes creating sleeping bags out of recycled materials for the displaced.
Mandela Day is marked on 18 July where corporates and people are encouraged to spend 67 minutes giving back in their community. The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) team spent their 67 minutes for Mandela during their make-and-donate-a-sleeping-bag campaign hosted by Kingsmead College in Rosebank, Johannesburg.
The company’s CEO Shabeer Jhetam said during the day’s activity, “I am really excited about our team participating in this ingenious recycling endeavour on Mandela Day. We believe that as conscientious citizens we can all make a difference by making small but important choices daily, to make the world a better place.”
For the past couple of years, in partnership with Community Hours – an NGO that facilitates and manages community service activities, they have created sleeping bags out of recycled materials including newspaper and plastic bags. The sleeping bag is carefully inserted into a waterproof cover made from repurposed billboard material.
The purpose of the campaign is to show that giving back can be done in an eco-friendly manner and raise awareness of homelessness in South Africa.
