A strong unpleasant smell emanating from a building in Braamfontein indicated the horrendous conditions in which some of the residents of Johannesburg are living in.
This is the site where the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) conducted a crime prevention operation searching for illegal substances on the evening of 2 August.
The City’s K9 unit and Metro police raided Twickenham Court, known to be one of many illegal buildings in the city. It was also established that tenants in this building were paying the rent.

During the operation, police discovered a few illegal substances and established that a resident was selling dagga inside one of the rooms. It was also discovered that illegal electricity connections were rife in the building. Scores of residents were searched in the corridors and inside their rooms.
The MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun condemned the living conditions and indicated that it was very clear that drugs were rife in the building.

“We are out here on a crime prevention operation and our K9 officers are searching for illegal substances,” he said.
Sun vowed that they would take on the drug problem, block by block, until it became safe for innocent residents living in Johannesburg.

“It is not going to be of use that we do this once in a month. This is why our JMPD officers and our K9 officers are here regularly to make sure we get rid of the drugs and the dealers from the street,” he said.
“We will come back and continue with these operations to ensure that we instil order. We will bring back the law and very importantly, we need to show residents living in Joburg that we are here to ensure that everyone is safe.”
