Detective Galane’s investigations help put suspects behind bars
SANDRINGHAM – The station commander praised Detective Galane who investigated the murder incident in which the accused was sentenced to life in prison.
When a crime occurs, detective Warrant Officer Matsobale Galane puts himself in the shoes of the victim’s family and starts to gather evidence to help put the suspects behind bars.
With more than two decades in the force, Galane understands the critical role each individual plays when investigating criminal cases.
It was 2.10am in February last year when a 20-year-old man was killed behind the Linksfield Shopping centre. The 43-year-old suspect struck his victim with a sharp object in the head and upper body. The victim was declared dead on the scene and the suspect ran away to the informal settlement in Primrose.
Galane then started his work, he sought any evidence he could find to connect the dots and link the suspect with the incident.
The man who doesn’t want to take credit for his work insisted it was the help of other people, including his colleagues and members of the community.
“It was homeless people who witnessed that crime scene. With their help and taking them to testify in court as well as [with the help of] my colleagues, we managed to secure the life sentence for a murder suspect,” he said.
The accused in the murder incident Galane investigated was sentenced to life imprisonment on 12 August at the Johannesburg Regional Court.
“As a detective, you must try to be friendly with community members for them to trust you,” he said.
Often community members don’t trust the police and are reluctant to work with them, although they may have witnessed a crime scene.
Galane said that as a detective you don’t need to overlook anyone but must treat people with respect and understand how vulnerable they may be while giving you information.
Sandringham Police Station Commander, Colonel Lindani Ndlovu praised detective Galane. Ndlovu urged members of the community to alert the police whenever they witness crime incidents. “We rely on the community for information to solve these cases,” he said.
