Joburg Market expansion and upgrade project commences
JOBURG CENTRAL – Also known as the Mandela Market, the expansion will create an added 28 new stalls and introduce new traders and build entrepreneurship.
The City of Johannesburg with Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba, the MMC for Economic Development councillor Leah Knott, and CEO of Joburg Market Ayanda Kanana launched the R144 million Mandela Market expansion project on 2 September with a sod-turning event in Joburg central.
The sod-turning event is the beginning of a critical upgrade to South Africa’s biggest fresh produce market.
The Mandela Market project has been allocated a budget of R250 million as an informal satellite market on the Joburg’s Market City Deep property. The figure is expected to increase during the expansion.

Currently, the market provides 71 informal traders with an opportunity to make their own income. After the upgrade, 28 stalls will be in operation.
Mashaba said during the sod-turning event that 200 jobs will be created through the expansion. “Little is known of the Mandela Market and the important role the market plays in keeping economies in many households ticking along, as many South Africans have to turn to entrepreneurship to survive.” Mashaba said.

The mayor added that the project will also focus on women and the youth when the new stalls are created and have an entrepreneurship programme.

The City hopes the expansion will help their goal of generating 5 per cent growth in Joburg year on year. The upgrade includes training traders on product handling, cold chain management and formalising businesses, and a brand new taxi rank that will service City Deep residents.
Upgrades are expected to be completed within two years.
