Police arrest woman for impersonating police

Police arrested a 41-year-old female for impersonating a police officer, in the Johannesburg CBD and is currently in police custody.

Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele said that the woman and her co-accused also face charges of kidnapping and extortion.

The pair were arrested on the corner of Bree and Von Brandis streets on 10 August after they allegedly robbed a 24-year-old male and his friend of a large amount of money. “The victims were coming from Mpumalanga to buy stock for their business when they were confronted by the suspects and asked for their passport at Noord Street,” said Mbele.

“They told them that they left them at home and [the suspects] demanded R2 000 each from them. They walked with them [the victims] around the CBD until they searched them and took R5 000 cash and ran away.”

The victims screamed for help and the community came to their rescue. The female suspect was apprehended and rescued by police from angry community members who were allegedly about to assault her.

Police recovered an amount of R2 050 from her. Mbele added that police are still searching for the male suspect who is still at large with some of the money.

An investigation is underway and the arrested female suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
