Metro police all on deck assessing Joburg CBD after lootings
JOBURG CENTRAL – Joburg CBD has been hit by violent rioting and looting since the 1 September. Chief of the Metro Police David Tembe and Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba assessed the damage in the inner city after widespread looting
Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has once again condemned the violence and looting that has taken place in the inner from 1 September.
Mashaba said in a statement, “These acts of looting are nothing but pure criminality and although it is said the criminals are targetting foreign-owned businesses, we are aware that local business owners are also affected.”
The mayor said the Metro police with local police, Emergency Management Services (EMS) will continue to clamp down on the rioting and looting, as some officers have been deployed to the Joburg CBD.
From the 2 September, 31 people have been arrested, one officer was shot in the leg allegedly by looters, and received treatment at Milpark Hospital and was later discharged.

Jeppestown was the hardest hit by looting, with some business car dealership burnt to the ground with their vehicles.

Mashaba has reassured residents of Johannesburg that all types of criminality will be dealt with, urging shop owners and residents to come forward if they have any information.
Tembe added that the situation is calm but remains tense.
