A 25-year-old man is in police custody following his arrest for an alleged hijack incident that took place in May in the Jeppe Police Station precinct.
According to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele, the arrest was made on 4 September near the Noord Taxi Rank.
Mbele explained that police were conducting their patrol duties when they noticed four men standing next to the car.
They stopped and requested to search them and further called in their car registration and verification network unit to verify the details of the car. “It came out positive that it was reported robbed from the owner and a case opened at Jeppe Police Station in May,” said Mbele.
“They asked who the owner of the vehicle is and one of the males said it is him. The suspect tried to run away and the police gave chase on foot and apprehended him.”
Mbele added that the suspect also faces charges of bribery after he allegedly tried to bribe the officers with R200.
The suspect is currently in police custody facing a charge for possession of a hijacked vehicle and bribery. The investigation is ongoing.
He is expected to appear soon at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
