Dancers raise awareness on stem cell donor NPO
MELROSE ARCH – A surprise dance outside Moyo restaurant to raise awareness on the Sunflower Fund left crowds asking for more.
A surprise flash mob dance at the Moyo Restaurant in Melrose Arch turned out to be a fun and successful event. Dancer Marcelle Batista from the Rainbow Line Dancers who hosted the dance said the flash mob was held for the Sunflower Fund to raise awareness for their cause.
“Rainbow Line Dancers, owned by Leon Nel who lives in Northcliff, with 15 other dancers, wore our Rainbow Line dancing T-shirts and Sunflower Fund tops. We had to renegotiate our plans last minute to accommodate the rugby which none of us had considered. We danced, in half-time of New Zealand versus SA game,” Batista said.
She added that they did two dances to Keith Urban songs and entertained the crowd outside the restaurant who even requested an encore.
“The objective was to raise awareness for The Sunflower Fund for World Marrow Donor Day 2019. Rainbow Line Dancers are very passionate about our annual dance demonstrations for raising awareness for various causes. We also like to bring attention to the fact that line dancing is becoming popular, is very social and lots of fun but also has massive health benefits associated [with it]. It really is beneficial mentally, physically, socially.”
The Sunflower Fund is a non- profit organisation which fights blood diseases like leukaemia through the recruitment of stem cell donors and maintaining a registry of potential donors committed to helping anyone in need of a life-saving stem cell transplant. The organisation fundraises to cover the cost of education and awareness about the need for and the process to become a blood stem cell donor as well as to cover the cost of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) tissue-typing test involved in the recruitment of donors.
The Sunflower Fund also maintains a patient support fund to assist patients who are unable to afford costs associated with getting to transplant as well as being actively involved in creating a platform for support structures to assist patients, families and communities.
