Linksfield’s Gabriella Shalekoff takes the cake

LINKSFIELD – Gabriella scored well on her culinary kitchen skills and plating design.

The newly crowned Taste Bud Battle’s Junior Chef of the Year 2019 hails from King David Primary Linksfield.

On 14 September, the long-awaited final cook-off of the popular kids/youth cooking competition, the Taste Bud Battle, got underway at the Capsicum Culinary Studio in Rosebank … and what a memorable experience that was for budding chefs.

Gabriella Shalekoff, an 11-year-old learner from King David Primary Linksfield nabbed the award with her mouthwatering buttermilk-crumbed chicken breasts, bay buns and homemade chunky chips with homemade mayonnaise – a standout dish that scored extremely highly with the judges.

Other winners, Trezar Bhana (16) from Crawford Sandton College and little Yusri Zunaid (5) from Crawford Sandton Pre-Primary both took the top cheffing honours in the senior chef and mini chef age categories.

“Some of the dishes that these children produced in the Taste Bud Battle final cook-off, in a highly competitive environment and under challenging time constraints, would make even Gordon Ramsay proud,” said competition director and COO of Contact Media and Communications, Donna Verrydt.

The Taste Bud Battle final cook-off featured the top 10 finalists in each of the three age categories including pre-primary, preparatory or primary and college or high school.

These contestants came from all over South Africa and made it into the finals by battling it out in the initial first plate round against more than 100 contestants.

This final round, however, meant they had to take part in a ‘secret ingredient’ challenge.

“It was really fun to watch these kids in action and we managed to unearth some unbelievable talent,” said Verrydt.

“More than that, however, we are proud that the Taste Bud Battle gave kids an opportunity to take part in something really special and to do it with family, friends and their schools supporting them all the way. And they got some unbelievable prizes to congratulate them on their fine effort.”

The Taste Bud Battle initially began in January when, through a social media and print campaign, kids were encouraged to create a ‘character dessert’ – a dessert inspired by a fictitious character or fantasy story.
